Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Add.10082/23

Scope and Contents

Letters from Thomas John Fairbank to his parents, Harold Arthur Thomas and Florence Kathleen Fairbank, sent whilst serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the Second World War. Particularly evident during his long posting in Gibraltar, the letters frequently contain descriptions of operating cases and sketches of joints and it is understood TJF’s father responded with advice on orthopaedics. The letters have been arranged in chronological order and by year into the following bundles:
Bundle 1 (1940): Letters (19) sent from France and Gibraltar - 31 March-December 1940
Bundle 2 (1941): Letters (23) sent from Gibraltar - 1 January-14 December 1941
Bundle 3 (1942): Letters (23) sent from Gibraltar - 4 January-19 July 1942
Bundle 4 (1942): Letters (23) sent from Gibraltar - 26 July-27 December 1942
Bundle 5 (1943): Letters (17) sent from Gibraltar - 3 January-30 May 1943
Bundle 6 (1943): Letters (18) sent from Gibraltar and Wales - 6 June-28 November 1943
Bundle 7 (1944): Letters (20) sent from England and France - 26 April-4 September 1944
Bundle 8 (1944): Letters (17) sent from France, Belgium and the Netherlands - 11 September-31 December 1944
Bundle 9 (1945): Letters (15) sent from the Netherlands and Germany - 8 January-17 March 1945
