Salonika Letters 1917-1918, 15 Jan. 1917-26 Dec. 1918
Scope and Contents
Bound volume of typescript letters sent from HATF to his wife, Florence Kathleen (nee Ogilvie) for the period 15 January 1917 to 26 December 1918. The letters begin on 15 January 1917 with HATF preparing to leave Southampton, England to return to service in Salonika and end with HATF leaving Malta on 26 December 1918 to return home following a three-month period of convalescence. In August 1918 HATF became seriously ill with malaria and was admitted to the 43rd General Hospital in Salonika before being put aboard HMHS Goorkha bound for Malta.
The letters were transcribed by Florence Fairbank and contain occasional non-contemporaneous notes and comments.
