Notes on Halleaths India letters, circa 1930

Scope and Contents

A small set of undated notes in pencil by James Steuart describing the 'India Letters' found among the papers of the Andrew Johnstone of Halleaths. The correspondence is comprised of letters from Bombay and Calcutta, as well as Canton, London, Macao and Manila, for the period of 10 June 1827-11 August 1846. The correspondents include Alexander Matheson, David Jardine, Dr William Jardine, John Johnstone, J. Lyall, John Skinner and James Walkinshaw. The notes are in an exercise book labelled on the front cover 'Halleaths Papers. India Letters'.

The notes were removed from a file of papers relating to the history of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd during the period before 1830, which has not been included in the Archive.
