Scope and Contents

Miscellaneous correspondence, with related papers, regarding Chinese railways. Much of the material relates to the British & Chinese Corporation Ltd. Other subjects include the China Consortium, Chinese Central Railways Ltd, Hankow-Canton Railway, Matheson & Co. Ltd, Nanking-Hunan Railway, Shanghai-Nanking Railway, Sse-Tch'ouen Railway, and Syndicat Européen d'Entreprises.

The papers begin with extracts and copies of letters regarding the Nanking-Hunan Railway, 1914, exchanged between Sir Charles Addis, the British & Chinese Corporation Ltd, E.G. Hillier, David Landale, C.C. Macrae, S.F. Mayers, C.H. Ross and N.J. Stabb. These are followed by miscellaneous letters and some telegrams (mostly typescript copies) of 1927-1935. The correspondents include Banque Industrielle de Chine; O.J. Barnes and N.J. Stabb (Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation); B.D.F. Beith; D.G.M. Bernard; British & Chinese Corporation Ltd; Raoul de Vibraye; V.M. Grayburn; Jarkong; H.D.C. Jones; D. Landale, Matheson & Co. Ltd; S.F. Mayers; E.R. Morriss (British & Chinese Corporation Ltd and Chinese Central Railways Ltd); C.W. Orde (Foreign Office); J.J. Paterson; K. Pindor; Charles See (Syndicat Européen d'Entreprises); and J.B. Stevenson. The envelope also includes many memoranda and other papers, some of which are enclosed with the letters. These include a newscutting of an article entitled 'Railway control by powers China's only hope', 1925, and a newscutting on 'How Mr. Mayers Sees Modern China', c. 1933.
