Scope and Contents

Private correspondence between D.I. Bosanquet of Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd, Penang and Singapore, and senior members of Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, with copies of related correspondence and other documents:

1. Original letters from D.I. Bosanquet to R. Gordon, with a few letters to H.D.M. Barton and J.H. Keswick, 10 February-20 December 1954. The letters are mostly typescript, but there are also a few hand-written letters, usually with typescript copies. The letters are accompanied by related documents, including a memorandum by Bosanquet on discussions he held with H.G. Clarke of Messrs M. Golodetz in London regarding Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd's sugar operations in Malaya and Singapore, 10 February 1954; a list of estates handled by Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd, 13 May 1954; a memorandum on the possibility of amalgamating the rubber interests of Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd, Wattie & Co. Ltd and Kennedy, Burkill & Co. Ltd, 14 June 1954; a memorandum by Bosanquet on the visit of W.A. Welch to Penang regarding J.A. Wattie & Co., 2 July 1954; and a memorandum by Bosanquet on a lunch with Chan U Seek and Y.C. Foo, dated 15 October 1954.

2. Copies of letters from R. Gordon to D.I. Bosanquet, with a few letters from H.D.M. Barton, I.D. Bruce, J.H. Keswick and H.H. Tod, 15 February-31 December 1954. The letters are accompanied by related documents, including a first draft of the memorandum and articles of association and of a suggested basis of agreement for the merger of the rubber estates agency departments of Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd, Kennedy, Burkill & Co. Ltd, and Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd (enclosed with Gordon's letter of 20 August 1954), and the notes of a meeting between H.D.M. Barton, F. Weatherly, W.A. Welch and H. Sidbury in Hong Kong on 23 August 1954 regarding the new rubber estate agency company.

Much of the correspondence in the volume is concerned with staffing issues, including Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd's staff; transfer expenses, etc., of staff of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd with Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd; London staff; standardisation of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd and Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd's employment terms; salaries; High Cost of Living Allowance; staff medical and accident insurance scheme; Provident Fund deductions; Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd's marriage allowance; per pros; and staff passages. There are also some letters dealing with particular members of staff and their relations, including A.D. Angus, C.L.C. Blott, B. Deakin, H. Flint, Duncan Fraser, H.F. Hopkins, Mrs Hopkins's baby, John and Clare Keswick, and Reg Shoppee. The remaining subjects include British Malayan Petroleum Co. stone; Brunei State roads; Brunei stone; engineering; estates and mines department; frozen meat; Indo-China agency at Jakarta; insurance; Kedah; Keir & Cawder Ltd; lawyers' fees; merger of rubber estates agency departments and formation of new company; Nam Whatt & Co. affair; new Brunei deep sea port; Powers-Samas; public companies in Penang; relationship between Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd and Jardine Matheson & Co. Ltd; rubber sales; property; securities; Serian/Simanggang Road; shipping; sugar; Tiny Mason (Bousteads); and J.A. Wattie & Co.
