Scope and Contents

Property correspondence between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong and Shanghai, and Jardine Matheson, Canton, Chungking, Foochow, Hankow and Swatow, with enclosed letters and papers:

FOOCHOW

1. Original letter no. P.1 from A.M. d'Oliveira, Foochow, to D.F. Landale, Hong Kong, 15 May 1951.

2. Copies of letters nos P.1-2 from D.F. Landale, Hong Kong, to A.M. d'Oliveira, Foochow, 17 March 1951 and 19 April 1951, and no. P.3 from J.H. Keswick, Hong Kong, to A.M. d'Oliveira, 27 December 1951.

The subjects covered include the registration of the firm's Foochow properties, including Lots Nos 169, 170 and 172.

HANKOW

1. Copies of letters nos HP-1-15, 17-22, 24-26, 29, 31-36, 38, 39, 45, 47-52, 54-60, 62, 68, 70-73, 76-78 and 93 from W.J. Wu, Hankow, to R. Gordon and H.H. Lennox, Shanghai, 20 January-18 December 1951. Nos 16, 23, 27, 28, 30, 37, 40-44, 46, 53, 61, 63-67, 74, 75, 79-92 and 94-96 have been transferred to other files, but there are sheets listing their contents. There is a note recording that no. 69 was not received, and was presumably cancelled.

2. Copies of letters no. P.1-5, 7, 9, 10, 13-18, 23 and 26-33 from R. Gordon and H.H. Lennox, Shanghai, to W.J. Wu, Hankow, 29 January-26 September 1951. Nos 6, 8, 11, 12, 19-22, 24, 25 and 34-51 have been transferred to other files, but there are sheets listing their contents.

The subjects covered include the Changsha new wall; Changsha property; drainage system - A.B.C.D. Godowns; Ewo Hong Site - Lots Nos 3 and 4; ex-wood oil installation site at Lot No. 62; Falconer Estate; godowns; Godowns B & C; House and Land Property Statement; House Property Tax; Jardine Estate Land Properties; Land & House Control Commission; land tax; rent deposit paid on Property Lot No. 19, ex-S.A.D. No. 3; rent deposits; and the Whistler Estate.

FOOCHOW

1. Copies of letters nos P.1 and 3-5 from A.M. d'Oliveira, Foochow, to H.H. Lennox, Shanghai, 21 April-8 August 1951. No. 2 has been transferred to another file, but there is a sheet listing its contents.

2. Copies of letters nos P.1-3 from H.H. Lennox, Shanghai, to A.M. d'Oliveira, Foochow, 3 May-7 August 1951.

The subjects covered include the air-raid shelter; condition of the firm's godowns; and repairs to Godown 'E', stables and Compradore quarters.

CANTON

1. Original letters nos P.1-2 from C.F. Stockar, Canton, to D.F. Landale, Hong Kong, 1 and 28 September 1950.

2. Copies of letters nos P.1-2 from D.F. Landale, Hong Kong, to C.F. Stockar, Canton, 8 April 1950 and 28 August 1950.

The subjects covered include the Tai Chung Hao godowns and Chungking property title deeds for Lots Nos 140, 758, 758-1 and 759.

SWATOW

1. Original letters nos P.22-23 from M.J. Henderson, Swatow, to D.F. Landale, Hong Kong, 17 and 28 January 1950.

2. Copies of letters nos P.1-2 from D.F. Landale, Hong Kong, to M.J. Henderson, Swatow, 4 and 19 January 1950.

The subjects covered include the impact of bombing attacks and the sale of Lot S.140.

CHUNGKING

1. Copies of letters nos P.12-17 from W.J. Wu, Chungking, to J.H. Keswick, Shanghai, 14 April-14 August 1950.

2. Copies of letters nos P.7-10 from J.H. Keswick, Shanghai, to W.J. Wu, Chungking, 5 May-13 September 1950.

The subjects covered include the sale of Chungking properties and land tax on the Ren Tou Shan property.

HANKOW

1. Copies of letters nos HP-014-043 from A.G. Jacobs, Hankow, to J.H. Keswick (mainly) and H.H. Lennox, Shanghai, 13 January-4 December 1950.

2. Copies of letters nos P.1-18 from J.H. Keswick (mainly) and H.H. Lennox, Shanghai, to A.G. Jacobs, Hankow, 3 January-14 December 1950.

The subjects covered include the A.B.C.D. Godowns; ex-wood oil installation; house property tax; Jardine Estate, including the Hong Garden; land tax; Lot No. 58 (ex-Japanese Concession); registration of property; regulations governing suburban land reform; sales of property; State Controlled Property Trust Co.; title deeds - Hankow property; and the Wayloo Building, Sankiao Street.

There is a note at the start of the volume recording that the P. Series was not used for Canton correspondence during 1951, and property letters were given semi-official numbers instead.
