Scope and Contents

Semi-official letters nos T.1-26, T.26A, T.27-33, T.35-44, T.46, T.46A and T.47-102 from J.C.A. Bowie, A.C.M. Harrisson and W.E. Postlethwaite, Matheson & Co. Ltd, Calcutta, to J.H. Keswick, W.J. Keswick and W.E.D. Smith, Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, with some enclosed letters and papers. The correspondence concerns the Calcutta's office business in the tea trade. The subjects include Bhattacharjee (Tea Blenders) Private Ltd; East Africa; the export trade from Calcutta; Hälssen & Lyon; the loose and packet trade in India; staffing issues; and Van Rees, Burcksen and Bosman. The letters are originals, with the exception of no. 55. The following letter numbers have been changed by hand: nos 26A (originally a second no. 25), 27 (originally a second no. 26) and 42 (originally a second no. 41). The ring-binder is labelled 'File I'.
