Scope and Contents

Copies of semi-official correspondence between Jardine Matheson, Tokyo, and Jardine Matheson, Korea and Tientsin, and Balfour, Guthrie & Co. Ltd, New York, with enclosures:

NEW YORK

1. An unnumbered semi-official letter from A. Davidson, New York, to F.A. Pollock, Tokyo, 10 April 1951.

2. Semi-official letters from F.A. Pollock and M.L. Railton, Tokyo, to A.S.R. Williamson, New York: unnumbered, 23 March 1950, 4 August 1950 and 5 August 1950, no. 68, 20 April 1950, and no. 1, 11 May 1950.

3. An unnumbered semi-official letter from A.S.R. Williamson, New York, to F.A. Pollock, Tokyo, 26 July 1950.

The subjects covered include Japanese canned goods, including tuna; M.G. Ritter; and the U.S. economic situation.

TIENTSIN

1. An unnumbered semi-official letter, 24 January 1950, and semi-official letters nos 1-2, 20 February 1950 and 30 May 1950, from F.A. Pollock, Tokyo, to L.G. Frost, Tientsin, with a draft letter to Frost of 25 January 1950, and telegrams to Tientsin, 19-23 January 1950. The subjects include Nisshu Sangyo Kaisha and soya beans.

2. Semi-official letter no. 2 from L.G. Frost, Tientsin, to F.A. Pollock, Tokyo, 12 May 1950, regarding the Tientsin British Chamber of Commerce Chairman's Annual Report for 1949.

KOREA

1. Semi-official letters nos 1-8, 10, 12, 15-25 and 27-30 from F.A. Pollock (mainly) and M.L. Railton, Tokyo, to W.K. Corneck, Seoul, 4 January-9 May 1950. Nos 9, 13, 14 and 26 are listed as missing.

2. Semi-official letters nos K 1-23 and 25-40 from W.K. Corneck (mainly) and D.A.S. Gordon, Seoul, to F.A. Pollock, Tokyo, 9 January-16 June 1950. No. 24 is listed as missing. There is also a personal letter from W.K. Corneck, Korea, to F.A. Pollock, Japan, 16 March 1950, numbered KC2/50.

The subjects covered include the agency handover to D.A.S. Gordon; agency house; airways; Butterfield & Swire; Carl Culver - States Marine Ltd; Economic Cooperation Administration cotton yarn; Economic Cooperation Administration Mission in Korea; economics; Hong Kong Airways; insurance; Korean Shipping Mission; Mitsubishi Chemical Works; power of attorney for D.A.S. Gordon; shipping; staff; trade; and transport.
