Semi-official correspondence between Hong Kong and Peking and Shanghai, 1956-1959

 sub-subseries
Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS JM/J1/127

Scope and Contents

Correspondence between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and its representatives at Peking and Shanghai, comprised of original letters to Hong Kong and copies of letters from Hong Kong. There are also enclosed letters and papers. The correspondents are H.D.M. Barton, D.I. Bosanquet, I.D. Bruce, D.C. Geddes, M.A.R. Herries and E.F. Watts, Hong Kong, and Y.C. Liu, T.W. Pan and Jack Yuan, Peking and Shanghai.

Much of the correspondence in the series is with Y.C. Liu, who was appointed as the Liaison Representative of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd in Shanghai following the closure of the company's branch in the city in 1954. Liu had responsibility for handling matters that could not be finalised during the period of the office's liquidation and to carry out liaison work on trading matters between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and trading organisations in China. J1/127/4 includes a copy of a memorandum of 14 April 1959, prepared by Liu for the Finance Bureau of Whampoo District, which provides a detailed description of his role (an enclosure to semi-official letter no. 14 from Shanghai to Hong Kong, 20 April 1959)
