Scope and Contents

Semi-official correspondence, with enclosed letters and papers, between H.D.M. Barton, I.D. Bruce, D.C. Geddes, R. Gordon, J.H. Keswick, H.H. Lennox, H. Sidbury and E.F. Watts, Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and the following correspondents in Australia:

1. Leo Frost was appointed as Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd's Resident Representative in Australasia in 1951, with instructions to stimulate business between Australia and the company's offices in Hong Kong, Japan and China, and to assist where possible the interests of Matheson & Co. Ltd, London. He was based at Sydney until July 1953, when he was transferred to a new office at 'Araluen', Barwon Heads, Victoria.

2. Robert Gillespie Pty Ltd of Sydney received investment from Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd in its New Guinea company during the 1950s. However, the venture was not a success, and the company withdrew in 1958.

3. Robert (Robin) Gordon was a Director of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd, who visited Australia during 1958 and reported back on his findings.
