Scope and Contents
Copies of semi-official correspondence between B.D.F. Beith (mainly) and J.F. Owen, Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, and A. Davidson, J. Harvey Swenarton and others, Balfour, Guthrie & Co. Ltd, New York, with enclosed letters and papers, including press cuttings and particulars of U.S. dollar drafts issued in Chungking forwarded by Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd and Matheson & Co. Ltd to Balfour, Guthrie & Co. Ltd, New York. Many of the letters are addressed to either Balfour, Guthrie & Co. Ltd or Matheson & Co. Ltd rather than a named correspondent. The file contains the following semi-official correspondence:
1. Unnumbered letters, 4 October 1943-28 November 1944, and no. 76, 18 February 1944, from Matheson & Co. Ltd to Balfour, Guthrie & Co. Ltd.
2. Unnumbered letters from Balfour, Guthrie & Co. Ltd to Matheson & Co. Ltd, 11 October 1943-6 October 1944.
There are also copies of telegrams exchanged between Matheson & Co. Ltd and Balfour, Guthrie & Co. Ltd, 16 February-9 August 1944. The subjects covered in the file include (among others) finance re Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd, H.H. Lennox, Textile Research Institute Inc. and the war.
