Most of the documents are from Hong Kong and Whampoa, but there are also papers from other parts of China and from the rest of the world. The majority of the documents are in English, but there are some in other languages, including Chinese. Many of the papers lack a date or place, but in some cases this information has been deduced from the other items. The documents include memoranda of shipments of goods; stock and sales accounts; delivery notes; indents (orders) for stores for ships; bills and receipts for goods; correspondence, including memoranda from a wide range of companies to Jardine, Matheson & Co. and others; lists and values of goods in stores; papers regarding auctions; memoranda of salaries and expenses, including for crewmen; and material regarding rents, property and rates in Hong Kong. Many of the documents date from the 1850s and relate to the ordering and delivery of goods and supplies with regard to Thomas Hunt & Co., Whampoa.
