Scope and Contents

The documents are dated Hiogo, Kanagawa, Nasgasaki, Tokei, Tokyo and Yokohama, and include a memorandum of goods suited for Japan, by William Keswick, 1862; a memorandum regarding the possibility of the seizure of the Takasima mine by the Japanese government, with other memoranda regarding the mine, including a set of additions to the Nagasaki telegraphic code; a memorandum regarding samples of coal supplied by Glover & Co.; memoranda of disbursements of various vessels; memoranda of the cost of shares in the Grand Hotel Limited, Yokohama; memoranda regarding goods shipped and received; an invoice and outturns regarding treasure; a memorandum of agreement regarding the sale of the 'Thales'; a memorandum of sugar samples, and a memorandum regarding the import of Swatow sugar at Yokohama; memoranda of agreement regarding supplies of gold and fabric goods; memoranda of assets and liabilities; a memorandum regarding the calculation of the cost of teas; memoranda regarding Yokohama wages and expenses; memoranda of Henry Gribble & Co.; a memorandum regarding Japanese indigo, from Godai Saiski, 1876; a memorandum of the loss sustained on a shipment of sugar adulterated with lime; memoranda of Japan cotton laid down in Liverpool; and a promissory note signed by Goto Shojiro. The documents include reference to Edward Fischer; S.J. Gower; C.S. Hope; Herbert Smith; Edward Whittall; Canton Insurance Office; Union Insurance Office; 'Reiver'; Nambu; camlet; metal; shipping; and yarn.
