Scope and Contents

Memoranda issued from the United States Consulate, Canton, including a memorandum regarding a boatload of lumber recovered from pirates; a proclamation to citizens of the United States of America engaged in murder and insurrection, or rebellion, against the Chinese government, from Peter Parker, Acting Commissioner and Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. in China, 4 January 1855, with a letter from Parker, Canton, to James P. Cook, U.S. Marshal in Whampoa, 9 January 1855; a notice regarding a proposed sale of property of the estate of Nye Brothers & Co.; a memorandum regarding the receipt of debenture certificates; and a notice of a dividend to be paid to the creditors of King & Co., Canton, with a related note on the same sheet by Henry Blanchard, receiver of King & Co.'s estate, Whampoa. There is also a set of regulations for the consular courts of the United States of America in China, and copies of interrogatories and cross-interrogatories addressed to the United States Consul or Vice Consul at Canton, undated. The documents include reference to James Purdon; Oliver Perry Russell; D. Spooner; Taiping Rebellion; diplomacy; and insolvency.
