Scope and Contents
The documents are dated Calcutta, Canton, Chefoo, Chinkiang, Foochow, Hankow, Hong Kong, London, Lyon, Macao, Montreal, Newchwang, New York, Rotterdam, Saigon, San Francisco, Shanghai, Swatow, Sydney, Tientsin, Whampoa and elsewhere, and include reports on the quality of tea imported from China; accounts of stores purchased in Great Britain; accounts of Thomas, Hunt & Co., Whampoa, including stock accounts; memoranda regarding shipments of opium and treasure; a memorandum regarding making guano charters for Swatow; police and lighting rates evaluations for tenements in Hong Kong; memoranda from Newchwang, including registers of sales of opium; memoranda, indents and delivery notes regarding stores and lumber, some relating to shipping; a machine shop pay order, Hong Kong; a memorandum regarding the sale of the 'Hong Kong Register'; a freight list for a voyage of the 'Clan Alpine' between Singapore and Calcutta; memoranda of recoveries of Margesson & Co., Macao; analyses of piece goods and merchandise accounts, Hankow; stock lists and memoranda of Arlès-Dufour & Co., Lyon, and Howland & Aspinwall, New York; memoranda and accounts regarding the 'Spec'; and memoranda of the Canton Insurance Office. The documents include reference to John Jack; Edward Vincent; Lane, Crawford & Co.; Robertson & Co.; Halifax; and coal.
