Scope and Contents
The documents are dated Calcutta, Canton, Chefoo, Dundee, Hong Kong, New York, Penang, Shanghai, Singapore, Swatow and Whampoa, and include memoranda regarding shipping and cargoes; an undated memorandum to Captain Hoole regarding contraband on his vessel; receipts and indents regarding Thomas Hunt and Co.; a draft advertisement of the sale of the 'China Mail' and the 'Overland China Mail'; memoranda regarding Howland and Aspinwall, New York; wage accounts of the 'James Shepherd', Singapore; memoranda from the China Sugar Refining Co. Ltd, including one regarding the treatment of workmen; shipping bills, Calcutta; memoranda regarding yellow metal and nails, Hong Kong; 'Rough list of laundry plant', typescript; memoranda of payments, Canton; a list of repairs required by the Indo-China Steam Navigation vessel 'Kutsung'; memoranda regarding charges on rugs, Yokohama; memoranda regarding boilings of Java sugar; a memorandum of costs of and charges on beer shipped from Calcutta to Singapore, 1841; a memorandum regarding dividends of shares in the Hongkong Land Investment Co., 1904; memoranda regarding rates on various properties in Hong Kong; and memoranda regarding business in silk with Chabrières, Morel et Cie of Lyon and others, 1890s. The documents include reference to A. Rodger; James Whittall; Brown and Co.; Dircks and Co.; Wanchi Steam Bakery; insurance; laundry; silver; and wine.
