Scope and Contents

The documents are dated Amoy, Canton, Foochow, Hankow, Hong Kong, Liverpool, London, Lyon, Macao, New York, Shanghai and Yokohama. They include memoranda and stock accounts for opium; domestic memoranda; particulars of shipments of silver and opium; analysis of the 'Composition of a Sample of Guano Marked "Fray Bentos" sent by Mr Alex R. Johnston'; memoranda regarding Loqua's chops, c. February 1813; memoranda regarding insurance; memoranda regarding silk shipments to England and France in the season 1871-1872, and other memoranda regarding transactions in silk; memoranda regarding tea shipments to London and New York in the season 1871-1872, and other memoranda regarding transactions in tea, including notes on the quality and value of teas; 'A Table shewing the Cost of Tea with all Charges - Tea as bought pr Picul & sold by the lb Avoirdupois', c. 1841; 'Remarks on Tea' from Lloyd, Matheson & Co., 1853; 'A General account of the Mercantile Transactions of the Footae Hong', translated by John Meadows, 1849; a report on the affairs of the Sailors' Home, Shanghai, June 1878; a memorandum of factory expenses for the year ending 30 June 1865, dated Canton; and memoranda of consignees of opium, Shanghai. The documents include reference to Henry Beveridge; F.B. Johnson; S.K. Mody; R. Pestonjee; Cunningham & Gamman; Fairlie, Fergusson & Co.; Howland & Aspinwall; Margesson & Co.; Uruguay; fabric; metal; shipping; silver; and specie.
