Scope and Contents

The documents are dated Bombay, Boston, Calcutta, Canton, Cumsingmoon, Hong Kong, London, Macao, Manila, Nagasaki, Oldham, Paris, Shanghai and Sydney. They include letters, draft accounts and memoranda regarding tea, insurance and cotton, dated Canton, Hong Kong and no place, 1836-1842 and undated; memoranda and accounts of sales of various commodities; 'A statement of the building materials, workmanship &c &c of Mr Jardine's Hong', undated; a sketch plan of a house intended to be built at Canton, with notes on its cost and construction, dated Hong Kong, March 1863; a synopsis of opium shipped from Bombay, May 1854; adjustments of opium, Macao, 1843; memoranda regarding compensation for opium surrendered to Charles Elliot, and delivered by him to the Chinese, 1843; accounts of the Mariner's Church, Hong Kong, with a summary of operations, December 1852; notices and correspondence from British diplomats and officers regarding the security of British interests in Macao and Canton, 1841-1855; sales and stock accounts and memoranda regarding opium from China and elsewhere; and a memorandum of agreement between Jardine, Matheson & Co. and Robert Forrester, boiler-maker, 1862. The documents include reference to the Canton Insurance Office; Augustine Heard & Co.; Thomas Hunt & Co.; Jardine, Skinner & Co.; Francis Macgregor; Magniac, Smith & Co.; Galle; Kumsingmun; Sydney; diplomacy; fabric; gold; metal; property; and saltpetre.
