Poem Le lutrin vivant, 1750-1796
Scope and Contents
Volume of poems, in French, by Jean Baptiste Louis Gresset (1709-77), poet, dramatist, with English translation in rhyming couplets, apparently by Sir Thomas Rookwood Gage (c.1720-96), 5th Baronet. The handwriting of the whole volume, except for the French original of The living desk, is identified in an inscription on the first page, by Sir Thomas Rokewode Gage, dated 1848. The introduction 'To the reader' says that J.B.L. Gresset, a French Jesuit, was banished from his order for composing the Perroquet de Nones de Nevers, 'a poem of infinite wit, and humour'. He subsequently left the order, and composed another poem, Adieu aux Jésuits, which was translated also by Sir Thomas Gage. P.2. Introduction 'To the reader'. Pp.4,6 etc. Sir Thomas Gage, The living desk by Fr. Gresset addressed to the Abbé Segonzac. Pp.5,7 etc. J.B.L. Gresset, Le lutrin vivant à Mr l'Abbé de Sagonzac, in another hand. Pp.20-21.
