Scope and Contents

During the Second World War, Earl was commissioned to prepare a series of pastel portraits of service men and women from what were then British dominions and colonies (described as 'Empire servicemen'), including Trinida, Newfoundland, Southern Rhodesia [i.e. Zimbabwe] and Ceylon [i.e. Sri Lanka]. The portraits were exhibited at the Royal Empire (late Commonwealth) Society in December 1945 as 'Warriors of the Empire'. The collection also includes a series of portraits of North American peoples for an exhibition titled 'Who are the Americans?'
