Circular Quay, Sydney, 1885

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y3086J/47

Scope and Contents

190 x 140 mm. A view of moored shipping taken from the west side of the quay which stretches around Sydney Cove, and looking towards the east side. A vast reclamation project created the quay in the years 1837-1844, putting ten acres of mudflat behind a sea wall. Well before this, however, the west side of the quay was the site of Sydney's first shipbuilding dock and in 1789 the first vessel built in Australia was launched from here. Government House can be seen on the horizon beyond the east side of the quay.
