Town Hall, Sydney, 1875 - 1883

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y3086C/19

Scope and Contents

225 x 285 mm. A view of the Town Hall from the junction of George Street and Druitt Street, a massively ornate structure, with a large clocktower. On the corner of the street in front is a suitably elaborate drinking fountain. Designed by J.H. Wilson, building started in 1868, the Duke of Edinburgh laying the foundation stone, and the clocktower was completed in 1875. This photograph would have been taken between 1875 and 1883; in that year work started on the Centennial Hall, an extension to the building in Druitt Street (at right of photograph). No sign of building work is visible. The church partially visible behind the Town Hall is St. Andrew's Cathedral.
