St John’s Anglican Cathedral, 1902 - 1912
Scope and Contents
Number 36 shows the exterior, the remainder the interior. 30, 34-35, 37, 39 show mourning for the sealing disaster of March 1914, in which 78 sealers from Newfoundland lost their lives when they were cut off on the ice in a blizzard. A pamphlet on this disaster, by the Rev James Bell, is included. The loss of the ship 'Southern Cross' at the same time brought the deaths among the fishing community to over 250. See 'Death on the Ice' (1972) by Cassie Brown.
