'Farmer Peeks' Hotel. Muisenberg, 1857 - 1879
Scope and Contents
166 x 128 mm. (oval print). Showing the thatched single storey buildings of Farmer Peek's Hotel at Muisenberg. Additional annotations by C.W. Busk are as follows: 'This well-known Inn has been replaced by a more pretentious modern building (1914) but the sign board (seen near the corner) has been preserved and is displayed in the hall of the modern building. There was a turn-pike gate near here. The situation is just where the Cape Town-Simonstown road reaches the shore of False Bay. The whole neighbourhood is a large fashionable seaside resort, joining on to Kalk Bay. The road to Cape Town is on the left; sea behind the hotel'. And:
'Multum in parvo, pro bono publico
Entertainment for man and beast all of a row.
Lekker kost as much as you please,
Excellent beds without any fleas.
Nos patriam Fugimus now we are here
Vivamus, let us live by selling beer.
On donne aboire et a manger ici,
Come in and try, whosoever you be.'
Lines inscribed on the old signboard at Farmer Peek's wayside inn at Muisenburgh near Kalk Bay on the Cape Toen-Simon's Bay road by two midshipmen walking back to their ship who stayed the night there and had no money to pay their bill, so designed a signboard and wrote these lines on it. The original hostelry has been replaced by a more modern building and the signboard has been removed and hung inside the entrance hall. C.W.B. 1914 June.'
