Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y30469K/11

Scope and Contents

The caption identifies this officer as Major Flint, who went to Neue Langenberg from Fort Hill via Igamba under the instructions of General Northey in 1916. Philip J. Sampson in 'The Conquest of German East Africa' (1918) speaks of Flint's arrival at New Langenberg: 'When our forces under Major Flint took possession of the powerful fort, they found the ordnance stores extremely well stocked with saddlery, arms and supplies of all kinds, including eight hundred bags of native food. The fort is a very substantial affair and looks not unlike a mediaeval castle. It is thoroughly well strengthened with elaborate trenches and earthworks protected by cruel looking stake pits'.
