Sundu Town, Kavirondo, 1889-11 - 1889-12
Scope and Contents
A view looking across an open clearing criss-crossed with paths towards the thatched huts of Chief Mumia’s village. Jackson and Gedge were at Mumia’s from November 7th to December 10th but these photographs are not specifically mentioned. Jackson (in ‘Early Days in East Africa’, p. 252) describes the month at Mumia’s as ‘distinctly monotonous. There was little or nothing to do, and nowhere to walk except down to the river to shoot hippos. There were no trees, and even our firewood had to be brought from the district we had just passed through and many miles away, and the heat was very oppressive.’ Mumia was the chief of the area when Gedge visited it, but the town was also known as Kwa Sundu, after Mumia's predecessor. Duplicate of Y30468K/41.
