Wanderobbo’s elephant hunt, 1889-08-31

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y30468K(LS)1/7

Scope and Contents

Duplicate of part of Y30468K/11 there entitled [Masai moran at Mianzini]. The slide shows a row of Masai warriors armed with spears, the figure at the left also holding a shield. Gedge’s diary entry for the day records the occasion: ‘In the afternoon took couple of photos of Wanderobbo; gave them dawa in the shape of small bits of paper with a word written on, and a dab of red paint. Had a snooze afterwards.’ Earlier Gedge had described the tribe: 'The Wanderobbo people, men and women, came freely about the camp. The men are really outlawed Masai, dressed the same and their manners and customs are much alike' (August 22nd 1889). The two lantern slides taken from this photograph described the men as ‘Wanderobbo’s elephant hunt'. The plates of this and the following print were developed on September 1st, ‘one v. good’ (evidently this one, since two figures on Y30468K/12 are blurred through movement).
