The photograph in fact almost certainly shows animals killed on the River Iyala, as described by Gedge on November 1st: ‘The River (Iyala) runs just below the village where we are encamped. 4 hippos were seen in a large pool by our men, so J[ackson] the Dr [Mackinnon] and I went after them and bagged the lot. The last one gave us a good bit of sport …’ And the following day Gedge records: ‘Went down in the morning to the river, took my rod. Photographed the four hippos before they were cut up… The camp reeks of hippo.’
