Hippos shot in R. Lisumu on boundary of Lower Kavirondo, 1889-11-02
Scope and Contents
155 x 113 mm. Showing four dead hippopotami lying on the river bank. The photograph in fact almost certainly shows animals killed on the River Iyala, as described by Gedge on November 1st: ‘The River (Iyala) runs just below the village where we are encamped. 4 hippos were seen in a large pool by our men, so J[ackson] the Dr [Mackinnon] and I went after them and bagged the lot. The last one gave us a good bit of sport …’ And the following day Gedge records: ‘Went down in the morning to the river, took my rod. Photographed the four hippos before they were cut up… The camp reeks of hippo.’
