 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y30468K/34

Scope and Contents

155 x 113 mm. A view looking along the moat, with high mud walls on either side and a gateway and bridge across the moat in the background. Gedge in his diary describes the village, although he does not mention photography: ‘People had all deserted their villages on ahead and were grouped on the hills to watch us. Crossed a river and then the people began to approach waving grass as a sign that they wanted peace. Got to camp inside a deserted village. About 12 a.m. sun v. hot. Village with a double mud wall and deep moat between, a fine fortress and for defensive purposes most admirably suited. People came in but v. slowly. There was much crying and wailing in the distance behind us this morning, the people bemoaning their dead. They say we killed a large number . . .’
