Soon after passing round the base of a hill, natives assembled in numbers and tried to steal cattle. Failing to do this they commenced stone throwing. . . Fired some shots at them on which they retreated to the summit of the hill. Shortly afterwards, just before reaching camp, the Dr’s [Mackinnon] servant, d-d young fool went and shot one of our guides dead as a door nail. . . . It is most unfortunate for us as it may cause a deal of trouble with his people behind . . .’
