View across inlet of Victoria Nyanza, looking towards Sendege and Bourganese, taken during a ‘scrap’ with the natives of S. Kavirondo, 1889-10-30
Scope and Contents
155 x 113 mm. A view looking over scrubland towards Lake Victoria. The caption refers to trouble with the inhabitants of the area who harassed the expedition for several days: ‘From summit took photo across inlet of lake looking SE over the Bourganese country . . . Soon after passing round the base of a hill, natives assembled in numbers and tried to steal cattle. Failing to do this they commenced stone throwing. . . Fired some shots at them on which they retreated to the summit of the hill. Shortly afterwards, just before reaching camp, the Dr’s [Mackinnon] servant, d-d young fool went and shot one of our guides dead as a door nail. . . . It is most unfortunate for us as it may cause a deal of trouble with his people behind . . .’
