Camp outside Kikuyu Forest, 1889-08-12
Scope and Contents
155 x 113 mm. A view looking across grassland towards the camp with the edge of the Kikuyu Forest beyond. The photograph gives a good idea of the layout of an expedition camp with tents arranged inside a cleared circle protected by a thorn zariba. Gedge briefly mentions photographing the camp: ‘Went out about 12 and took a couple of photos of the camp.’ Gedge’s description of the camp (Camp V ‘just inside forest by a small stream of v. good water’) does not entirely tally with the photograph, but this and Y30468K/8 are certainly the photographs referred to as the forest in the background can be matched up with that visible in Y30468K/7.
