F.J.J., Dr Mackinnon, J Martin Treaty making in Kikuyu, 1889-08-11
Scope and Contents
155 x 113 mm. Showing Jackson, Dr Mackinnon and Martin seated in a semi-circle around the Kikuyu Chief Kamiri, with a group of seated warriors behind and the camp laundry drying on lines in the background. Gedge’s diary entry for the day states:’ Came back to camp about 12. After tiffin made blood brotherhood with Kikuyu Chief [Kamiri] and got hold of some Wanderobbo elephant hunters to act as guides for the next few marches. Photographed the group of Kikuyu in camp. Made treaty with chief. Their ceremony of blood brotherhood is an interesting one. Gave my blood brother some pins wrapped in paper as medicine to hang around his dirty neck…’ The date of this treaty making, and the identity of Kamiri, is clarified by H.B. Thomas in ‘Early Treaties made by F.J. Jackson’ (‘Uganda Journal’, Vol XXIV, 1960, p 260-1).
