The dating of this photograph is uncertain: Gedge was at Gulu Gulu from November 6th to December 11th 1888, December 15th to 20th 1888, February 1st to 2nd 1889 and May 24th 1889, but his diary makes no mention of photographic activities. The two middle dates can be discarded since Jackson was not then at Gulu Gulu and Y30468K LS3 shows a photograph of him evidently taken on the same occasion as this print (indeed, Jackson very probably took this photograph). During their brief stop at Gulu Gulu on May 24th 1889 it seems unlikely that the pair had time for photographic recreation: Gedge’s diary for the 23rd-24th records how ‘v. tired’ he is (J. too is knocked up a bit!) and how troublesome the porters are being, with one man having to be handcuffed for desertion. The most likely date therefore seems to be sometime during Gedge’s long first stay at Gulu Gulu at a time when Jackson was also present.
