Ceremonial visit to Lamu, 1901
Scope and Contents
166 x 116 mm. A view looking along the Lamu waterfront towards the British Residency where crowds are gathered on the beach to watch the arrival of a boat at the Residency pier. The occasion and date have not been identified, but since both the boat and the Residency are flying the Zanzibar flag, it is likely that this is a visit by the Sultan (Y30468A/18-20, 22-28 and 42-43 also deal with the same event). Sultan Hamoud bin Mahomed (Sultan 1896-1902) visited Lamu for a holiday from September-October 1901 (missing Mathews’ funeral) and this would tie in chronologically with these pictures being placed near those of Mathews’ funeral in the album.
