Sir Gordon Guggisberg, Governor, with Nana Prempeh after his return to Ashanti, 1924-11
Scope and Contents
190 x 150 mm. Photograph by Justus A. C. Holm, Official Photographer to the Gold Coast. Prempeh I (c. 1872-1931), Asantehene of the Ashanti, was deposed and exiled to the Seychelles after the Ashanti Campaign of 1896. Guggisberg was petitioned to authorise his return on his arrival in 1919; he was sympathetic, but the matter was still contentious, and it was not until November 1924 that Prempeh returned. See R. Wraith, ‘Guggisberg’, pp. 202-205. This photograph shows Prempeh, Guggisberg, John Maxwell and other officials, and Africans grouped under ceremonial umbrellas.
