Scope and Contents

205 x 150 mm. Group of about sixty men and two women in nurses uniform seated at the foot of and up a large staircase. The central figures have not been identified, but Miss Smyly has noted Colonel de Burgh Rose and John Maxwell. Richard Aubrey De Burgh Rose (1877-1962) served in the South African War with the Worcestershire Regiment; was seconded to the Gold Coast Regiment, W.A.F.F. in 1906, and commanded it from 1914 until 1922 (D.S.O. 1916). Sir John Maxwell (1875-1946), a solicitor by profession, was appointed as Assistant District Commissioner in the Gold Coast in 1902, Provincial Commissioner in 1907, Secretary for Native Affairs in 1923, Chief Commissioner for Ashanti, 1923. Knighted in 1930, he returned to the UK in 1931 and held various administrative posts in transport, including Regional War Transport Commissioner.
