Hon. C. Smyly 1896 and Sir Samuel Lewis, 1896
Scope and Contents
98 x 138 mm. on mount. Lewis and Smyly, in wigs and gowns, are posed on either side of a pillar with books on top. Sir Samuel Lewis (1843-1903) was the first African to be knighted. Educated at the C.M.S. Grammar School, he later studied law in England, and was called to the Bar in 1871. Though acting at various times as Queen’s Advocate and Chief Justice, he declined permanent Government Employment and was a member of the Legislative Council for more than 29 years. He was first Mayor of Freetown, and received a knighthood in 1896. Studio photograph probably by W.S. Johnston but name cut from mount.
