Scope and Contents
158 x 130 mm. A view showing the flag-raising ceremony at Gordon's palace which took place on September 4th. Two flagpoles have been mounted on the ruined palace. By the right hand pole stand Lieutenant (later Admiral) Cecil Staveley and Captain (later Lieut. Col) James Watson. By the left hand pole stand the Sirdar's Egyptian ADC and Bertram Mitford (later Major General). In the foreground massed soldiers face inwards towards the ruined walls of the palace. A rear view of Capt Von Tiedemann, ornate in the white uniform of the Cuirassiers, can be seen. The photograph is stuck on to an album page entitled 'Khartum, September 4th'.
