With captured Egyptian flag, 1898

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y3042C/69

Scope and Contents

151 x 88 mm. A view showing a row of Jaalin warriors, one waving an Egyptian flag. Presumably this photograph and the following images were taken after they had rebelled against the Mahdi. Centred around the town of Metemma, the Jaalins, under the dominance of the Baggareh, had fought for the Mahdist cause but in June 1897 they revolted against Dervish authority and Mahmoud (later captured at the battle of Atbara) was sent by the Khalifa to quell the rebellion. This resulted in a massacre of Jaalins at Metemma on July 1 1897. In the later stages of the campaign the Jaalins fought with the English forces.
