Slatin, who had returned to the Sudan at Gordon's invitation in 1879, was Governor of Darfur until his capture by the Mahdi in December 1883. He escaped from imprisonment at Omdurman in February 1895, largely through Wingate's efforts. Slatin later worked during the campaign as Wingate's Assistant Director of Intelligence.
