 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y3029C/35

Scope and Contents

157 x 111 mm. Showing a long raft on board which are a number of huts containing the paddy:
'The climate is conducive to paddy cultivation, especially in the valley of the Muittha River which joins the Chindwin at Kalewa, and the traditional movement of the paddy for milling at Monywa is as fine an example of transportation economics as one could find. Rafts are built of the plentiful bamboo of the area, ten to twelve huts of dani leaves, better known as atap are erected on the rafts and these are filled with paddy. With a tiny hut for the raftsman, they are carried down the river and at their destination not only the paddy but also the rafts and huts are sold' (McCrae and Prentice 1978, p.82).
