The New Church and Lake, 1868 - 1869

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y3022E/27

Scope and Contents

321 x 195 mm. A view from near The Cedars, a house on the hill overlooking the SW portion of the lake, looking eastwards towards St Thomas' Church, with the Willow Bund and town beyond, and Dodabet in the distance. A petition for a new church to ease the overcrowding in St Stephen's had been made by the citizens of Ootacamund as early as 1853, but it was not until 1867 that sufficient finances had been raised and the foundation stone was laid. The church was completed in October 1870 and opened for public worship in April 1871. For further details, see Sir Frederick Price, 'Ootacamund, a history' (Madras, 1908), pp. 86-92. Bourne no. 1967.
