And so back at the Post Office he goes and posts the first letter he has ever written, 1940 - 1949
Scope and Contents
A series of British Official photographs (Crown Copyright Reserved). They each have the following typewritten caption on the reverse:
'This series of photographs show how illiterate natives of Northern Rhodesia are being taught to read and write in a short course lasting 3 or 4 weeks with the aid of a book called 'Shibukeni' using pictures in relation to words of common usage. The adult student for which the course is devised need not go to school; all that is needed is the wish to learn and a friend who is already literate. By this method over 100 people in one Mining Compound have learned to read and write'.
