'The African in this picture set is Arap Kipkoske, a member of the Kipsigis tribe of Kenya. He and his fellow tribesmen are benefitting from the advice and help given them by the Kenya Agricultural Department in developing their land and in trying new methods of production. In this case, the new idea was to plant quick-growing wattle trees, which would give fuel and protection from the wind for crops and cattle, and could be used for building houses. Some of the elder tribesmen objected 'only God should plant trees'. But some, amongst them Arap Kipkoske, approve the idea and start to plant'.
