Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

A series of British Official photographs (Crown Copyright Reserved). They each have the following typewritten caption on the reverse:

'In the Northern Territories of the Gold Coast, the Local Treasuries run by Native Authorities are a complete success. Native Authorities are made responsible with their District Commissioner acting as guide and friend, not only for the collection of local revenue but also for its expenditure. In the Kassena-Nankenni Division, the Native Authority comprises a Federation of Kassena and Nankenni Chiefs, 10 in number. They elect a President, the present Chief being Awe, Chief of Navrongo. At an Estimates Meeting held each year at the end of March, the Chiefs and the District Commissioner discuss their financial position of the Native Authority and estimates are made of revenue and expenditure of the forthcoming financial year after last year's workings have been received. The revenue accrues from the following sources - market tax, beer tax, slaughter-house tax, cattle pound and (by far the largest source of revenue) the 2/- head-tax levied on every able-bodied man, which last year brought £2,500 to the Native Treasury. The expenditure of the revenue is on agriculture - experimental and demonstration farms, loans to farmers etc., water supplies, cattle insurance, roads, forestry, schools, police, medical supplies etc. The following pictures show some of the workings of the Kassena-Nankanni Native Treasury'.
