Nkanu Lepers Village, 1940 - 1949
Scope and Contents
General view looking along tree-shaded path towards buildings. The typewritten caption (which is a duplicate of a pencilled annotation) on the reverse reads 'Built by voluntary labour. Clan gave 2 square miles of land. 3 compounds built, each for 40 lepers, 1 for women and 2 for men. Village filled to capacity in 12 months and plan being made for extension. Lepers are self-supporting, but pay entrance fee of 30/. [?shillings] which is paid back at rate of 5/. per month to enable them to buy food until their farms are producing. Photo shows a path leading to one of the men's compounds'.
