[Cairn in Udi Division, Onitsha Province], 1940 - 1949
Scope and Contents
View of the pyramid-shaped cairn built to commemorate the opening of the first road built by voluntary labour in Udi Division.
A typewritten caption (which is a duplicate of a pencilled annotation) on the reverse reads 'Cairn erected to commemorate the opening of the first road built by voluntary effort in Udi Division. It was built a few months before the opening of the Mass Literacy campaign which gave such a stimulus to Mass Education. It was because the people showed, by making this road (and another one at Affa), that they had the capacity for voluntary service that the D.O. launched a full scale Mass Education campaign. 12000 man-days of labour were given and the road was completed within 2 months. N.B. The cairn is in the form of a pyramid of the type that is built locally to honour tutelary fetishes.
