Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y305L/29

Scope and Contents

104 x 146 mm. A Cabinet Card Photograph, half length portrait of the missionary John Mackenzie (1835-1899) seated at a table. Mackenzie came to Kuruman as a L.M.S. missionary in 1858. In 1862 he was transferred to Shoshong and from 1869-71 he was on furlough in England. In 1873 he was appointed tutor at the Moffat Institution, then temporarily based at Shoshong, and moved with the school to Kuruman, where he taught from 1876-82. After a second furlough he resigned from the Society in 1884 and was appointed Deputy Commissioner in Bechuanaland, a position from which he resigned however after only three months. From 1891-99 he was Missionary Pastor at Hankey, Cape Colony. A fervent believer in the extension of British rule in South Africa, his trip to England in 1882-84 was spent largely in speaking, writing and campaigning on this issue. The backmark reads:'Shoyer Bros Photographers, 43 Grave Street, Near Government House, Cape Town. Duplicates may be obtained at any time and enlargements made to any size'.
