M. Jackson, Border Magistrate. Kenhart [i.e. Kenhardt], 1868 - 1873

Scope and Contents

43 x 57 mm. (Oval image). A carte de visite head and shoulders studio portrait of the moustached and heavily whiskered Maximilian James Jackson (circa 1841-?). Between 1858 and 1868 Jackson acted as a clerk in the Cape Civil Service in Victoria East, Richmond and Murraysburg; in the latter year he was appointed Special Magistrate on the Northern Border and in 1869 was Inspector commanding the Northern Border Police and Commandant General of Forces in the Koranna War. He retired as Northern Border Magistrate owing to ill-health in 1873 and from that time until 1880 served in various capacities in Richmond, Fraserberg and Oudtshoorn. He served in Knysna during the period 1880-1901. During this time he was Civil Commissioner and Resident Magistrate for Knysna and was also Port Officer and Shipping Master. As Civil Commissioner he served on the 1882 and 1890 Commissions responsible for the relocation of the Knysna woodcutters onto settlements. During the South African War he served briefly during 1901 as the Commandant of the Knysna Home Guard. Until his retirement in1905, Jackson was Resident Magistrate and Collector of Customs at Simons Town, and Sub-Commissioner on the War Losses Compensation Committee from 1901-1903. The backmark reads: 'By appointment to H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh, 'Honi soit qui mal y pense', Lawrence and Selkirk photographers, 14 Strand Street, Cape Town.
