Cetcewayo's brother and wifes [sic], 1882 - 1885
Scope and Contents
143 x 99 mm. Showing Cetshwayo's half brother Dabulamanzi seated in front of a Zulu hut with a woman, two men and a child beside him. Since there is only one woman present the caption may possibly mean that one of the men is Dabulamanzi's wife's brother. Dabulamanzi (circa 1844-1886) was a younger son of Chief Mpande and was present at Cetshwayo's coronation in 1873. He commanded the Undi Corps at Isandhlwana where his task was to circle around the hill and strike the retreating British. Disobeying orders not to cross the border, he entered Natal (i.e. KwaZulu-Natal) and organised the unseccessful attack on Rorke's Drift where he lost circa 400 of his men. He was given a chieftainship under John Dunn after the war and was shot by Boers after a cattle dispute on September 22 1886.
